Part-Time Job Ideas

by Jeffrey Jenkins
  • Overview

Part-time jobs are available to those who want to work, despite the fact that the economy is in a slump and business closings and layoffs are occurring daily. If you have exhausted all avenues and hope of finding work in your area of expertise, here are some ideas for employment opportunities that might get paychecks rolling in again. Or, perhaps you're already employed and would just like a side job to bring in some needed income. Consider one of these jobs to help with the extra cash flow.
  • Personal Trainer for Children

More parents are hiring personal sports trainers for their children. Childhood obesity and households that require two-parent incomes have given rise to parents seeking someone to spend time playing sports with their children. You would be called on to spend time with a child, usually during after-school or evening hours, to help the child improve skills in the sport of his choice. This part-time job is for you if you have skills in basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, golf or any other popular sports activity.

  • Errand Runner

Bachelors, new moms, busy families and others are willing to pay you to run errands for them. Duties sometimes include grocery shopping, banking, dropping off or picking up clothes at the cleaners or returning books to the library, among other chores. A bachelor might hire someone to prepare dinner for him every evening. A new mom might need someone to order theater tickets or to take her older children to sports practices or music lessons. This part-time job is for you if you enjoy multitasking and variety.
  • Dog Poop Cleanup Attendant

Dog poop cleanup may not be the most interesting job, but before you scan to the next job, consider this: Many major cities now have at least one dog poop cleanup company, and most cities have several. Picking up dog poop isn't a job everyone wants to do, so the pay is usually a little higher than other types of cleaning jobs. This part-time job is for you if you love dogs and need flexible working hours.
  • Party Organizer

Children's birthday parties take time and effort to organize and present. Many children want themed parties with knights, pirates or ballerinas. Parents are willing to pay someone to take control of their child's party and make all the phone calls and arrange all the details: hire the entertainment, purchase the tablecloth, plates, napkins, decorations and party favors and originate ideas for games and prizes. This job is for you if you enjoy being around children and like a little excitement.
