How to Open Windows Explorer to a Directory

by Sian Harris
  • Overview

Opening up Windows Explorer and browsing to a directory location is relatively simple. However, if you know exactly where you want Explorer to open and do not want to browse to that location you need a way to automatically open Explorer to a specific directory.

  • Step 1

    Click on the "Start" button.
  • Step 2

    Click on "Run".
  • Step 3

Type "explorer" with the "root" option along with the directory location you want to open. For example, if I wanted Explorer to open in the d:\temp directory, I would type "Explorer /root, d:\temp" at the run prompt.
  • Step 4

Click "Ok" at the run prompt or hit the "Return" key on your keyboard. Windows Explorer should then come up in the directory you specified.
