Online Degree Vs. In-Class

by Ashley Leary
  • Overview

There are many educational options available for people at all levels. You can receive your Associate, Bachelor, Master , or Doctoral degree through online or face-to-face classes. Many people wonder if an in-class or on-line degree program would best meet their needs. This article will explain the components, benefits and downfalls of online and in-class degree programs.
  • In-Class Degree Programs

In-class degree programs are beneficial for people who need more guidance from professors and find discussions and clarification important. This option is more personable because you are meeting face-to-face with your classmates and teachers. Also, having scheduled in class meetings is helpful to those who need more structured work time and time management. It is helpful when you have a consistent meeting date so you are accountable to get your work done and spend that time in class. State colleges, community colleges, and vocational schools offer flexible options for in-class degrees.

  • Downfalls of In-class Programs

For those with busy schedules, classes that meet in person can be a challenge. A negative aspect is the fact there is not much flexibility with other obligations, for example if you are working and going to school. Often if you miss more than one in class session, there are academic consequences.
  • Online Degree Programs

Online programs are a good option for busy people. There is flexibility in what day you work on your coursework as long as it is completed by the deadline. Also, if you are completing a degree online, you do not need to worry about the location and commute to your class. Often you have classmates who are from a variety of locations to offer a variety of perspectives.
  • Tips for Online Programs

Online options are often misconceived as "easy" or less work than in class programs. This is not true. Online classes take just as much, if not more time than the traditional in-class options. To be successful in an online class you need to be very disciplined in setting aside time to complete your coursework, tests, and assignments. It is helpful to have time management skills as online deadlines are important. (editor see reference 1)
  • Downfalls of Online Degree Programs

One downfall of online programs is there is not as much discussion and dialogue between the teachers and students. You do not get to know your classmates as much. Further, if you are taking a class that is challenging for you, it is much harder to get help from your teacher when you are only communicating via email. Also, you must make sure that you must have all of the technology needed to communicate and participate in the course. Some classes require web cams, audio equipment and special programs.
