Is It Okay to Give Dogs Fish Oil?

by Contributing Writer
  • Overview

Like humans, dogs suffer from all kinds of diseases. Fish oil has had great results in treating humans for all kinds of illnesses, and has had similar results for their canine companions.
  • History

Fish oil is well known for its anti inflammatory powers. Veterinarians first began using it to treat dogs who suffered from allergies.

  • Benefits

Since its original treatment of allergies, vets have found that fish oil offers many more benefits in treating canine diseases. Kidney disease, arthritis, heart disease and high cholesterol are among the many conditions that fish oil is prescribed.
  • Forms

Fish oil comes in either a supplement or liquid form. The supplement is a softgel, that can either be given orally, or cut open and drizzled onto food. The liquid form can be used in the same way, but without having to cut up softgels.
  • Considerations

Fish oil does not provide immediate medical improvements. It can between 6 to 8 weeks to notice any kind of change in your dog. The first sign of improvement is a shiny, healthy coat.
  • Misconceptions

You need not buy special fish oil for dogs. Although human fish oil supplements may be given to your pet, it is always best to speak with your vet before giving him any vitamins.
