How to Obtain a Copy of a Washington Marriage License
by Jimmy Boyd
-
Step 1
Determine the office that stores the Washington marriage license that you want to copy. The Washington Center for Health Statistics maintains and provides copies of marriage certificates for licenses filed between Jan. 1, 1968 and four months before the present date. Use the county auditor where the spouses filed the marriage license if the filing occurred in the last four months. Use the county auditor where the spouses obtained a marriage license for marriages before Jan. 1, 1968.
-
Step 2
Use a directory of Washington county auditors to find the contact information for the county that provides the certificate that you want. Call the phone number to find out about the local county procedure to obtain a marriage certificate. The county may charge for the cost of printing a copy of the certificate. The directory has a phone number and physical address for all Washington counties. Follow the auditor's instructions to obtain a copy of the certificate.
-
Step 3
Fill out the mail-in order form to order a copy of the marriage certificate by mail from the Center for Health Statistics. The certificate will arrive in about three to four weeks. Include a check or money order payable to Department of Health. As of 2010, the fee for mail-in requests is $20 per certificate. Refer to the order form for additional Express Mail or Federal Express fees. Send the form and payment to the following address:
