New Hairstyles for Long Hair

by Autumn Jones
  • Overview

Long hair is a perennial favorite, and every fashion season debuts it with a twist (sometimes literally). For summer, wear your hair loose and full of body. If the day is hot and your hair is threatening to drive you insane, sweep it into a sophisticated updo.
  • 1940s-Inspired

One style that's turning heads is nothing new: the glamorous waves of the 1940s are back with a vengeance. This look is not for the disheveled-prone. Hair is worn sleek on top, curly on the bottom and swept elegantly over one shoulder. To create your own 1940s mermaid waves, give your hair a deep side part. Smooth the top half of your hair with a frizz-preventing product, such as a serum. Using a big curling iron, wrap your hair around the barrel diagonally, to create a wave instead of a curl. For a truly authentic look, pair with ruby lipstick.

  • Middle Part

Sleek hair is still fashionable, but now it's full of body. BCBG, Matthew Williamson and Gap all showed off long, straight hair with center parts in their spring 2009 shows. Toss your flat-iron aside for this look, because you won't be needing it. The key is to create straight hair that still (magically) maintains volume. After shampooing and conditioning your hair, use a wide-tooth comb to create a distinct center part. Apply a straightening balm to your hair and comb through for even distribution. Then, section by section, blow-dry your hair straight on a low setting, using a round brush. When each section is dry, wrap it around a big roller to maintain its sleekness and give it volume. For particularly problematic sections, you're allowed to use the flat-iron, but only for a minute.

  • Off-Center Chignons

It's a humid day, and your hair is plastered to the back of your neck. If you can't take it any longer, gather your hair into an off-center chignon (debuted in Phillip Lim's spring 2009 show) so that you can focus on other things. This hairstyle is extremely versatile and easy. First, decide what kind of look you're going for: sleek and elegant, or loose and romantic. Sweep your hair into a side ponytail and fasten with an elastic. For the sleek look, do a tight ponytail; for the looser look, let pieces of hair fall out naturally as you put your hair up. Place the ponytail at the nape of the neck, or higher up against your head for a daring, space-age look. Twist the ponytail until it begins to curl in on itself, then wrap it around the elastic. Secure with bobby pins or another elastic, if needed.
