Natural & Harmless Ways to Induce Labor

by Nay Moon
  • Overview

Being pregnant is a beautiful, natural occurrence that can be uncomfortable and painful at times. Women look for natural methods to ease their discomfort and hopefully bring on labor. Unfortunately, no one can rush Mother Nature. The arrival of baby will occur when he is ready. Before attempting any herbal therapy, consult a physician or an herbal professional. There are some herbs that should not be consumed by pregnant or lactating women.
  • Exercise

Walking allows gravity to move the baby into position. The rocking of hips while walking will keep the joints relaxed. Exercising regularly during pregnancy will ease the labor process and make for a smooth recovery. All those midnight trips to the bathroom actually do some good. For those of you who still enjoy sex, it is believed to be a good labor prompt. A man's sperm contains prostaglandins, a natural chemical that aids in ripening the cervix. Achieving an orgasm will release oxytocin, which is a natural labor inducing element. The chemical form of oxytocin is Pitocin, a drug administered in hospitals to induce labor. Stimulating your nipples has been reported to bring on uterine contractions. If the thought of sex is unappealing or unrealistic, you can try eating pure black licorice or pineapple. Both items have natural enzymes to thin or soften the cervix.

  • Food

The labor salad contains chopped romaine lettuce, watercress and red cabbage. The dressing is nothing more than balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Combining these ingredients has been reported to bring on contractions. Serve it with spaghetti that has plenty of basil and oregano in the sauce. Basil and oregano also have been touted for their natural labor induction ability. Spicy food containing capsicum has been hailed as a natural remedy to begin contractions. However some women have found it to cause diarrhea and stomach upset during labor. Use with caution.
  • Other Inducers

Pinching the webbed area between the thumb and forefinger should cause a contraction. If one is felt while applying pressure, release, wait a couple of minutes and try again. Another area to apply acupressure is four fingers up from your ankle bone. When the correct spot is located, you will have a contraction. The belly rub is another alternative. Start with your hands flat at the top of your belly and gently rub down. Meanwhile, tell your baby that it is time to be welcomed to the family.
