Fleas are a major nuisance--tiny vampiric creatures that dare to claim squatter's rights on your pets and proceed to dine on them and you. There are a variety of flea treatments on the market today, but so many of them are full of chemicals and synthetic ingredients. You can do it naturally by making your own flea treatments in your own kitchen. It's easy to do, and it's easy on your wallet, too.
  • Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (Dogs)

Give your dog a long, sudsy bath in liquid Dawn soap. The oils in Dawn suffocate the fleas and dislodge the flea eggs from your dog's fur.

  • Homemade Flea Spray for Dogs

Blend together 600 ml of warm water, 2 drops of cedar wood oil and 2 drops of essential oil of lavender. Spray it on your freshly bathed dog, being careful to avoid his eyes and nose.
  • Herbal Flea Powder for Dogs

Combine equal parts rosemary, yellow dock, rue, wormword, fennel and eucalyptus. Crush the mixture into a powder, mix well and rub the powder deep into your dog's fur.
  • Citrus Flea Dip for Cats

Pour two pints of boiled, distilled water over four sliced lemons and let the mixture steep overnight. Bathe your cat with 3/4 of the mixture, dry her well, then distribute the rest of the mixture over her fur as a repellent.

  • Flea Spray for Cats

Mix equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. Spray the solution evenly over your cat and gently massage it in with your hands.
  • Follow-Up

Treating the fleas on your pet will not eliminate the problem--you will need to treat your home. There are many all-natural options that you can either do yourself or have done by a professional.

  • Warning

Dog treatments are for dogs only, and cat treatments are for cats. Don't interchange them; some ingredients that are safe for one species can be toxic to another.
