Overview
Natural Cures for Bad Breath
Bad breath, otherwise known as halitosis, can seem almost impossible to get rid of. The typical reaction is to rinse the mouth with harsh chemical mouthwashes. However, there are some commonly overlooked solutions to bad breath that are natural and simple to implement. These remedies, used conscientiously every day, can completely eliminate problems with bad breath.

Function
Bad breath is caused when bacteria break down food residues within the mouth. These residues turn into foul-smelling sulfur compounds which can be difficult to get rid of. Bad breath can also be caused by eating cheese, onions or garlic or by smoking. Conditions, such as tooth decay and gum disease, can also contribute to bad breath.

Facts
When most people take care of their oral hygiene, they only brush their teeth. However, regular flossing and removal of the coating on the tongue is important for curing bad breath. Get some natural dental floss and a tongue scraper or additional toothbrush with stiff bristles. Make a daily effort to remove the food that gets caught between the teeth. Scrape or brush your tongue with the additional toothbrush after each brushing. Make a paste of baking soda and water. Mix this with a natural mint toothpaste and use it to assist the removal of the tongue coating. Gargle with a solution of baking soda and water. Drink unsweetened, brewed green tea several times a day.

Benefits
Baking soda is helpful for bad breath because it alters the pH in your mouth. This makes the mouth a less friendly environment for bacteria to grow. The polyphenols in tea, especially green tea, are also especially good for slowing the growth of bacteria. Drinking tea will also keep the mouth moist, discouraging bacterial which thrive in a dry environment. You will get the greatest benefits from a natural tongue scraper made from unalloyed copper.

Considerations
Gum disease and cavities don't just cause bad breath--they are also a major cause of tooth loss. There are holistic dentists that can treat your dental conditions and provide regular care without harsh chemicals. Natural dentists often use biocompatible materials and avoid the use of mercury in fillings. Consult a directory of holistic dental practitioners to find one in your area.

Effects
Using natural methods to relieve bad breath will also leave your mouth in a healthier state. In addition to these methods, be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and preferably after every meal. Brush the entire tooth area thoroughly, taking care to brush the backs of the teeth, for at least two minutes. See your dentist twice a year for an examination and professional cleaning.
