Nail Gun Safety Guidelines

Overview
A nail gun is a convenient tool. It has the capability to fire nails in quick succession. If the trigger is activated, the gun will shoot out a nail as soon as the muzzle makes contact with the surface. It is easy to see why this is a dangerous tool that needs to be used properly and safely. Following some nail gun safety guidelines will help you to avoid injuries involving a nail gun.
-
Know Where the Target Is
When you attempt to fire a nail, know exactly where your target is and what is behind it, just as if you were shooting a pistol. There is always the chance that you could accidentally fire a double shot that may not go into the wood. Keep all body parts away from the line of fire.
-
Know the Danger of a Pneumatic Nail Gun
When you use a pneumatic nail gun, which is driven by an air compressor, be aware of the air hose. When the air hose is stretched through the construction area, it poses a hazard. Other workers could trip over it.
-
Know the Force of a Nail Gun
When you are holding a piece of wood to be nailed, be very alert. The nail gun will forcefully drive through obstacles embedded in the wood, such as other fasteners or knots. You cannot predict what path the nail will take through the wood. The nail could exit out the side of the wood. Make sure you keep your hands at least one nail length away from the muzzle during the entire time you are using the gun.

General Safety Rules
Do not use rusty nails in a nail gun. They will damage the gun and will send rust sailing out of the gun. Always use clean, new nails in the gun.
Wear safety glasses, goggles or a face shield. The gun can send errant nails flying up toward your face.
Do not use the gun if it is missing the nose guard safety spring.
Do not rest the gun against your body.
Do not put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to use the gun.
Never point the nail gun at another person.
-
Know How to Maintain the Gun
Properly maintain your nail gun. Regularly lubricating and maintaining the gun will reduce the number of misfires and jams that require repairs to the gun.
