  • Overview

Going to freshman orientation at the very beginning of our time in college can be an exciting experience. After all, you are preparing to advance your education and social life. While the prospect of leaving your high school friends behind can be frightening, making new friends can ease your transition into college life. Get a head start on making new friends by forming bonds during freshman orientation.

  • Step 1

Seek out friendships with people who share your interests as well as with those that have differing opinions, lifestyles or backgrounds. Use freshman orientation as a prime opportunity to network with a variety of people.
  • Step 2

Leave a positive impression on your classmates by approaching them with a smile. Helping other students overcome their insecurities can also help you make new friendships.
  • Step 3

Find ways to speak to as many people as possible to increase your chances of making worthwhile connections. Break the ice with personal anecdotes or witty observations.
  • Step 4

Practice active listening when talking to fellow students at your college orientation. Let other people speak without interruption. Ask open-ended questions to encourage them to continue talking to you. Repeat back important information to show that you value their time.
  • Step 5

Participate in as many freshman orientation activities as possible to take advantage of the exposure to both current and incoming students. Sign up for campus-wide and departmental tours. Check out special interest areas such as athletics or fraternities. Attend social mixers such as dances or football games to mingle with your classmates.
