Family wilderness therapy, also called family adventure therapy, began in the 1980s after wilderness programs for teens with behavioral challenges became popular. This type of program was a new way for parents to connect to their teenagers.

Features
Family wilderness programs endeavor to improve family communications and connections, removing daily distractions such as phones and televisions. Outdoor activities encourage discussion, sharing and joint problem solving.

Short-term goals include improved understanding, acceptance and trust. Long-term goals extend after the wilderness adventure and typically include topics to be addressed in weekly therapy sessions.
-
Activities
Family wilderness or adventure camps include camping, hiking, rock climbing, primitive skills, whitewater rafting and shelter building. All activities encourage a connection with nature.
-
Time Frame
Typically, family wilderness camps last for three to five days and some extend up to two weeks.
-
Locations
Many family wilderness camps are in the western part of the U.S. in states such as California, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. All of them are located away from cities in places recognized for their natural beauty.
