5While there is no cure for existing general paresis, there are many ways in which you can prevent further nerve damage and manage the mental and physical impairments that it can cause. Follow the tips below to begin managing your general paresis.
- Treat the infection. General paresis is an effect of long-term, untreated syphilis. Treating the infection with antibiotics will reduce new nerve damage, but it will not cure damage that already exists.Follow the doctors orders. Because paresis has a variety of neurological effects, symptomatic treatment is needed. Take all prescribed medications as directed by your doctor and make sure to schedule appointments when new complications appear or existing complications worsen.Receive regular physical or occupational therapy. General paresis often causes muscle weakness and the inability to use muscles appropriately; regular physical and occupational therapy will help to strengthen these muscles and re-teach them how to perform certain functions. Consult your physician for a referral.Ask for help. If you suffer from severe paresis you may need assistance in performing basic functions such as eating, sleeping and health care. Seek help from family and friends or assisted living professionals/centers if needed.
