Making Organic Baby Food

by Erik Steel
  • Preparing the Food

Prepare and cook organic foods as usual, without added salt and spices (which your baby does not need in her diet). Reserve the cooking liquid if you wish to use it to thin out your baby food, except in the case of high nitrate foods, depending on your child's age. (For more on baby nutrition and nitrates, see the Resources section below.) Allow the food to cool before moving on to the following step.

  • Blending the Baby Food

Using a blender or food processor, puree or blend your baby food. To obtain a better texture, use breast milk, cooking liquid or organic milk or soy milk as a liquid medium. (For more on introducing solids, see the Resources section below.) After blending, spoon the food into a dish and feed your child. If you wish to store your baby food for future use, move on to the following steps.
  • Freezing Organic Baby Food

Freeze your baby's organic food for later use. Add your cooked, cooled and blended baby food to a reusable ice cube tray to create cubes of organic baby food. This should be used before it undergoes freezer burn, and should be fully thawed before consumption.
  • Canning Organic Baby Food

Use traditional canning methods to preserve your organic baby food for later use. Make sure to use sanitary equipment and to use opened canned baby food quickly to protect your child's sensitive stomach. You can find more on canning in the Resources section below.
