How to Make a Shopping Bag Halloween Costume

by Lesley Barker
1Turn your 2- or 3-year-old into a shopping bag for Halloween. He can be safely and conveniently held by two parents or two older siblings while trick-or-treating. This is a low to no-cost Halloween costume for a very small child who still needs a lot of supervision, but is old enough to go door to door for the first time.Department store shopping bag
Scissors
Tights
Sweatshirt or leotard
Masking tape
Marker
Eye mask with elastic, or make-up
Prepare the shopping bag. Open a large department store shopping bag so that it sits empty and open on the floor. Have the child stand in the bag barefoot. Trace around the child's feet with a marker. Lift the child out of the shopping bag. Cut out holes using the tracings as your cutting guide. Place the child back in the bag and pull it up past the knees to make sure that the holes are large enough to permit the child to walk. If they are too small, enlarge them.Reinforce the holes with masking tape so they will not rip. Tear 2-inch strips of masking tape and fold them over the holes. Stick 1 inch of the tape on the bottom of the bag at the edge of the hole and pull the tape through the hole to fold over on itself but sticking to the top side of the bag. Place the next piece of tape so that the sides touch the first piece. Add one piece of tape at a time, going clockwise until the entire hole is bound with tape.Dress the child in a pair of solid colored tights and a matching leotard if the weather is warm, or a matching sweat shirt if the weather is cold.Use make-up to give a girl shopping bag round red cheeks and lipstick. Boy and girl shopping bags can wear a mask around their eyes, but very small children sometimes do not like the feel or the look of masks so be sensitive to what your child will tolerate.Send the shopping bag out to trick or treat with two companions, siblings or parents. The older trick or treaters can "carry" the shopping bag, with each person holding onto one of the shopping bag's handles. Watch how the shopping bag gets offered extra treats.
