Overview
Some families enjoy making their own Christmas decorations as well as making presents for other family members and friends. Using a bit of imagination and a lot of creativity, these people can come up with clever, creative ideas. Not only are the finished items beautiful, they bring the family together to have some fun while making them. Here are ideas for creating a Christmas tree decoration made from mosaic glass or a mirror.
-
-
Step 1
Decide on the size of Christmas tree that you want. Most models range between 10 and 21 inches.
-
Step 2
Save broken glassware, dishes, or mirror to use for making the trees. If you don't have any on hand, you can purchase materials for this purpose and break them yourself. Some craft stores also sell glass already broken for just this purpose.
-
Step 3
Make the necessary purchases at a local craft store. If no local craft store exists, you can make the purchases online at Michaels or Hobby Lobby (see Resources).
-
Step 4
Break the glass yourself, if necessary. Place the glass between pieces of lightweight cardboard or heavy fabric. Using a medium soft mallet, break the glass until it makes the size of pieces you want to use for the tree.
-
Step 5
Paint the Christmas tree base a color that will blend with the glass you are using. Make sure that it is thoroughly dry before moving on to the next step.
-
Step 6
Glue the mosaic glass onto the tree foam. Put the smaller pieces toward the top, working downward for the larger pieces. Put the glassware closely together, leaving as little room as possible in between the pieces. Let the tree dry thoroughly before moving on to the next step.
-
Step 7
Use liquid lead or caulk to fill in the spaces between mosaic pieces. Liquid lead works best for darker colors. Caulk works best for lighter shades. Wipe away any that gets on the glassware or mirror.
-
Step 8
Glue a star on top of the tree if desired. For trees under 15 inches in height, the star should measure around ¾ to 1 inch. For trees that are between 16 and 21 inches, use stars that are 1 ¼ to 2 inches in diameter.

- Do not use a heavy hammer to break the glass or it will end up in tiny slivers that will be difficult to work with.
