Overview
Milk chocolate covered pretzels are a favorite treat among kids and adults alike at birthday parties, holidays and special occasions. With a little bit of time and a few pieces of equipment, you can make gourmet candies in your own kitchen for less expense than buying them in a candy store. Fix these sweet and salty pretzels when you have a spare hour. If you have kids, enlist their help. They'll enjoy learning how to make milk chocolate covered pretzels for the guests--and eating the candy treat themselves.
-
-
Step 1
Melt 1 lb milk chocolate over low heat in a double boiler or a small heavy-bottomed saucepan, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon to prevent the chocolate scorching on the bottom. Pour the milk chocolate into a medium size ceramic mixing bowl and let cool for about seven minutes, or enough time for the chocolate to thicken slightly and cool down enough to handle.
-
Step 2
Spread out a sheet of wax paper on a long, flat surface. Set the bowl of chocolate next to the wax paper. With clean hands, dip a thin salted pretzel into the melted milk chocolate and twist it around until entirely coated with chocolate.
-
Step 3
Lay the pretzel on the wax paper and repeat with the next pretzel, laying this one two inches away from the first. Continue moving the bowl of chocolate down the wax paper as you dip the rest of the pretzels--this keeps the dripping at a minimum--laying the milk chocolate covered pretzels two inches apart. The chocolate will spread a little, but should be thick enough to cling to the pretzel.
-
Step 4
Place the milk chocolate covered pretzels, still on the wax paper, in the refrigerator once they've cooled to room temperature. When the chocolate has hardened, store the candies loosely in a covered tin at room temperature. The treats will keep fresh for up to five days.

- Visit your favorite fine candy store or the gourmet chocolate section of the supermarket to choose milk chocolate that's a notch up from the usual in quality.
You can use other types of chocolate, too, such as white chocolate and dark chocolate. Milk chocolate tends to melt more quickly than bittersweet chocolate or semisweet chocolate, both because of its increased sugar content and the milk solids.
