Overview
The pressure you are putting on yourself to throw a great holiday party may be making the task much more daunting than enjoyable. Alternatively, maybe it's your turn this year to host the holiday gathering and throwing parties has never been your forte? Whether you assume on the role of host/hostess for this year's holiday party with ardor or reluctance, there are steps you can take to that will amp up the fun factor for you and your guests. In addition, before you know it, you will be throwing a holiday party that you and your guests will never forget!

Step 1
Consider different themes. People love themed parties! They present the opportunity to dress in some degree of costume and to be silly or glamorous, stunningly chic or noticeably cheeky. They also create a sense of fun and camaraderie among guests who can share in an attempt to further the unifying party theme. This makes for great ice breaking and a more relaxed atmosphere. It will also leave a lasting impression on your guests. Here are some theme examples: Grandma's Christmas, North Pole Christmas, White Christmas, Silver Belles, and Beaus, Glitter Gold, Celebrity Christmas.

Step 2
Make it interactive. We've all been to the holiday parties where couples file in, plate some food from a buffet table, find quiet corners to sit and converse among themselves commenting on the food or decor as they people watch, then bid the hosts farewell. You probably have to search deep back in the depths of your memory to recall these parties and even then, the recollections are quite slim. Make your guests interact with one another with games, such as engaging, entertaining board games or games that you come up with that match your specific theme or the overall holiday theme.
-
Step 3
Be creative! The more that you do to distinguish your party as unique, the more memorable it will be. Instead of suiting a side table up with finger foods before the main course is served, hang decorative bags of sugarplums, caramel popcorn, Hershey's kisses or theme related snacks from mistletoe that you have sprinkled about the house. (You may want to consider your party and guest types before you come up with an idea using mistletoe.) If your theme is Silver Belles and Beaus, you can integrate silver bells and bows into your party decor, including on serving platters, and can choose party songs and games that use bells.
-
Step 4
Present picture opportunities. Pictures are the keepers of moments and memories, right? The more unique and fun you make your party and theme, the more likely your guests will be to bring their cameras and snap photos. You can start even with your own costume. If your themed costume is out of this world, your guests will shoot photos like paparazzi. Your guests' costumes might be quite picture worthy as well. You can also create good picture opportunities with creative theme oriented displays, decor and activities. For a White Christmas theme, there would surely be some snaps of a fake snow fight or a fake snowman that your guests created with humorous props that you set out.

Step 5
Give your guests something to take home with them. Party gift bags don't have to be expensive to be memorable. They just need to be special and creative. For instance, a cheap mini gift bag with just two delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies and a small square of homemade fudge to reinforce your Grandma's Christmas theme could be just that extra touch to make your holiday party unforgettable!
