How to Make a Dog Bed Easily

by Karen Frisch
  • Overview

Although many dogs enjoy sleeping on their owners' beds, most like having a bed of their own. Aging dogs especially need a comfortable, warm place to sleep that doesn't require jumping. While there are many different styles of dog beds on the market, there are quick and easy ways to make your own for less money and with fewer decisions. The following steps will give your dog a cozy, warm place to sleep when he feels like it, and he'll have you to thank.

  • Step 1

Choose a wicker basket that fits your dog comfortably. While most dogs don't mind sleeping on a lumpy bed, many like to feel support against their backs. Laundry baskets have high sides but don't have an opening for the dog to step through. You can find a range of dog baskets in pet stores.
  • Step 2

Select a variety of blankets to create a bed for your dog. Many dogs who sleep on their owners' beds like to dig and arrange the blankets to their liking, so you needn't be too particular about placing them in the basket. Include one or two old blankets in the basket. A blanket you've had for a long time has the added advantage of a familiar smell and is comforting to the dog. If the blanket is tattered in places, salvage a piece and hem it to give it new life.
  • Step 3

An even easier way to create a bed is to use a cushion. A large cushion in any shape that fits in the basket can also serve as your dog's bed. Cover old cushions with blankets to make the bed as comfortable as possible.
  • Step 4

Choose the right location for your dog's bed. Dogs who have always slept in their owners' beds might not want to use a new bed of their own if it isn't in the same room. Aging dogs might prefer a spot away from doors that let in drafts in cold weather and a spot that's conveniently located where the family spends most of its time.
  • Step 5

Put favorite toys in the basket. If your dog is getting his own bed for the first time, you might need to entice him to use it if he's been used to sleeping in yours. If toys don't work, tuck a treat or dog biscuit within the blankets. If the bed is in a room where the family spends time, the dog will eventually come to enjoy his new sleeping quarters.
