How to Make Cinnamon Dough Ornaments

by Carole Vansickle
  • Overview

Cinnamon gives any room a festive atmosphere. When warmed, cinnamon dough ornaments release new waves of their scent and bring back memories of the fun you had making or receiving them. You can use these ornaments for decorating Christmas trees and to garnish packages or in a gift basket along with other holiday goods.

  • Step 1

Stir the glue, cinnamon and applesauce together in the bowl. The mixture should form a reddish-brown paste that's relatively thick, like cookie dough.
  • Step 2

Knead the dough much like you would bread dough, by pushing and pulling the lump into shape repeatedly. Do this until the texture is even and the dough has a thick, pasty consistency.
  • Step 3

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to sit at room temperature for about an hour.
  • Step 4

Place the dough between two pieces of wax paper and roll it out with a rolling pin until it is about 1/4 inch thick. Keep an even thickness all the way around the lump.
  • Step 5

Cut out the ornaments using the cookie cutters; do not peel the excess dough off the bottom sheet of wax paper until you have cut out all the shapes that you wish.
  • Step 6

Make a hole for the ribbon by punching the drinking straw through the top of the ornament.
  • Step 7

Peel away the extra dough so that you're left with a wax sheet full of Christmas shapes.
  • Step 8

Keep the shapes in a warm, dry plac and aellow them to dry for five days. As they harden, turn them over periodically to make sure the dough dries out evenly and flat.
  • Step 9

Thread a ribbon through the hole in each ornament, and tie it with a decorative bow.

  • Do not eat the dough. It can make you sick. The ornaments will shrink as they dry, so do not be alarmed as they grow more compact.
