How to Make a Christmas Alexander

by Jae Rauhut
  • Overview

A Christmas Alexander offers holiday warmth, comfort and relaxation. This scrumptious drink is Santa's version of the classic Brandy Alexander, which has quite an intersting history. According to the cocktail blog, Sloshed, the Brandy Alexander first appeared in 1922 at the wedding celebration of Princess Mary and Lord Lascelles in London. The drink became so popular in the middle of the century that Mary Tyler Moore asked for a Brandy Alexander during her job interview in the pilot episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Sendecki.com reports that the Brandy Alexander was John Lennon's favorite cocktail. There is even a song about the Brandy Alexander written by Canadian Songwriter, Feist.

  • Step 1

Place cocktail glasses into the freezer a couple of hours before mixing your Christmas Alexander to chill the glasses.
  • Step 2

Crack ice by placing ice cubes into a sturdy plastic bag and strike against a hard surface, or place the ice between clean cloths and smash with a rolling pin or hammer. Gather the cracked ice and place into a cocktail shaker.
  • Step 3

Pour the brandy, crème de cacao and the light cream into the cocktail shaker. Shake well for 30 seconds or until a frost forms on the shaker. Strain the concoction into a chilled cocktail glass. Place a peppermint candy cane in the glass. For an extra Christmas flare, add red and green cake sprinkles along with the usual nutmeg topping.
  • Step 4

For other drinks in the Alexander family, try Alexander's Sister which is made with 2 measures of gin, 1 measure of green crème de mint and 1 measure of light cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Another variation in the Alexander family is Alexander's sister-in-law with 1 measure of gin, 1 measure of white crème de menthe and 1 measure of light cream. If you like rum then sip on Alexander's baby that includes 2 measures of white rum, 1 measure of crème de cacao and ½ measure light cream.
