How to Make Cheap Meals

by Jonathan Roe
  • Overview

Making healthy meals doesn't have to be expensive. By buying in bulk, using a freezer and planting your own herbs, healthy meal preparation can be accomplished more easily and cheaply.

  • Step 1

Join a warehouse club. Stock up on lean cuts of meat and frozen fish. Look for common staples you use on a daily basis and buy them in large quantities. Make sure you can use them before they spoil.
  • Step 2

Cook freezer-friendly meals such as soups, stews, meatballs and lasagna. Separate the leftovers into individual dinner portions before freezing. Clearly label each container with its contents and the date it was made.
  • Step 3

Fill a large planter with equal parts peat moss, vermiculite and compost. Sprinkle the planter with herb seeds and place the container in a spot that gets plenty of sunshine. Water every couple of days.

  • The annual membership fee to a warehouse club is a nominal amount; you'll usually save that much money in one trip. Keep a list of all the different meals you have stocked in your freezer and make sure it is up to date. This saves you time and the effort of rummaging around in the freezer to figure out your options. Many people don't have enough space or time for a full garden, but everyone can easily plant herbs. Considering how expensive fresh herbs are, it is an effective way to save money.

  • Not all meals can be frozen and reheated and still taste good. Before you make something in bulk to freeze, do a trial run to make sure it is a freezer-friendly dish.
