How to Make a Cell Phone Pouch Necklace

by Carole Vansickle
  • Overview

A great way for kids to keep track of a cell phone is for them to wear it around their neck. However, this is not always practical since kids are active and you may not want to leave the cell phone exposed during play. By making a fun-to-wear, attractive cell phone pouch necklace for their phone, you can encourage your child to keep their phone on them at all times without having to worry about the damage that the phone may incur by being clipped to a belt or just exposed in a pocket or hand.

  • Step 1

Make the pattern for your pouch. Using your cell phone as a guide, measure the length and width of the cell phone onto the cloth. If you like, you can simply trace the cell phone with the chalk, which will come off easily later. Once you have your cell phone's outline, trace a pattern using the ruler that creates a rectangle that is 3 inches longer than twice the length of your cell phone and 1 inch wider. This means that if your cell phone is 2 inches wide and 4 inches long, your rectangle will be 3 inches wide and 11 inches long.
  • Step 2

Cut out the pattern. Use neat, even cuts and be careful not to make the edges jagged.
  • Step 3

Sew the pouch. Fold the cloth over so that there are 2 1/2 inches of extra cloth at the top. You will probably start to see your pouch taking shape at this point. You should use a zigzag stitch to sew up the sides of the pouch. Do not sew past the point where there are two pieces of cloth to sew together.
  • Step 4

Flip the pouch. This will put the seams on the inside, and give you a neat outer skin for your pouch. You will see at this point that you have created a pocket for your cell phone that has a flap that will hold the phone inside.
  • Step 5

Create the necklace portion of the pouch. You can cut the ribbon to any length you want as long as it will make a loop long enough to go over the wearer's head. Thread the ribbon through the yarn needle, then push the needle through the very top of the pouch just below where the seam ends. Knot one end of the ribbon so that it will not pull out of the pouch. String on as many beads as you like or as will fit before using the needle to secure the other end of the ribbon in the other side of the pouch and knotting it off.
  • Step 6

Attach a piece of the Velcro to each side of the pouch so that when you press the flap over the top of the pouch, the Velcro holds it closed. Now you have a beautiful and entirely secure cell phone pouch necklace for your cell phone.
