How to Make Bread in a Crock Pot

by Yvette Sajem
  • Overview

Did you know that the crock pot in the back of your kitchen cabinet has been hiding a secret talent? Your crock pot is actually perfect for creating all kinds of nutritious, delicious breads. The best part is, you simply whip up your dough, walk away and let your crock pot do all the work. In a few hours you have fresh, hot, homemade bread. So before you run out and buy a fancy bread maker, give that old crock pot a chance to prove that it can do more than make vegetable soup.

  • Step 1

Preheat your crock pot on its highest setting. Grease a baking pan (either the one that came with your crock pot or one that fits inside of it) heavily with butter. Set aside.
  • Step 2

Combine 2 cups warm (not hot) low-fat milk, 1/4 cup honey, 1/8 cup sugar, 3 tbsp. canola oil, 2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast and 1/2 tsp. salt in a large mixing bowl. Stir vigorously to thoroughly mix.
  • Step 3

Add 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour. Using an electric mixer, beat on high for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Step 4

Stir in 2 cups almond flour, 1/2 cup raisins and 1/2 cup finely chopped almonds. Use your hands to thoroughly combine all ingredients. Press out any dry spots or air bubbles.
  • Step 5

Place the dough in your prepared baking pan. Cover with a damp cloth and allow it to rest for 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Step 6

Remove the damp cloth and place the baking pan in your crock pot.
  • Step 7

Cover your crock pot and allow the bread to bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the bread comes out clean.
  • Step 8

Remove your bread from the crock pot and allow it to cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm with butter and honey.

  • Don't lift the lid of your crock pot too many times during the baking process. This will allow steam to escape and disturb the baking process.
