How to Make a Blog Site

by TJ Sonntag
  • Overview

Personal weblogs, or blogs, are an online method of communication and can encompass any topic imaginable. There are blogs about politics and current events, blogs about hobbies and interests and even blogs about the art of blogging. Some bloggers use the web space as an online diary or journal, while others mainly post links to other websites of interest. All the tools you need in order to make your own blog can be found online for free.

  • Step 1

Identify your topic. This will influence the name of your blog, so think it over. You may choose to create a family news blog or perhaps a journal of your experiences in a certain industry, in school or with an extracurricular activity.
  • Step 2

Log in to your blogging account. Select the option to create a blog. You will be asked to choose a name and may need to answer questions concerning your language or other preferences.
  • Step 3

Select a theme for the look and feel of the blog. Your choices will differ based on the blogging site chosen.
  • Step 4

Start posting. You can add links, pictures, and even embedded videos from YouTube to your posts.
  • Step 5

Once you feel comfortable with regular blogging, you can choose to upgrade to a self-hosted site and purchase a customizable design template. These advanced tools provide a great deal more freedom, although maintaining your blog in this manner does require some technical knowledge.

  • Link to other blogs of a similar theme and style. If you find yourself pressed for topics to write about, take a few moments to check out what your peers are saying. You may find an issue to comment on or realize that you have a differing viewpoint to share. You can build readership by including your blog in search engines and by commenting on other blogs. Adding your blog's URL to the comment gives everyone viewing a way to find your blog.

  • Personal details should never be shared on a public blog and even professional blogs should include contact methods that do not compromise your home address or telephone number. You should also take care to keep your identity anonymous if you plan to blog about your company, coworkers, or work environment. Even general industry comments can be detrimental to your career if you choose to make your identity known.
