How to Make Bird Seed Feeders

Overview
Bird watching is a fun and interesting activity, and you don't even need to leave your house to do it. You can easily get all the birds to come to you with a homemade bird feeder. There are various ways to construct one, and you can build it using things you have around the house. You can even make your own bird food; for some recipes, click on the link in the resources section below.

Step 1
Build a very simple fruit bird feeder using an orange or coconut. Cut the fruit in half, scoop out the inside, and bore four holes around the rim of the shell, equidistant to one another. Thread a thick piece of string through each hole, gather them all in the center, and knot them together. Then loop a final piece of string through the bunch and hang your bird feeder on a branch. Fill it with bird seed.

Step 2
Make a bird feeder out of a pine cone or toilet paper roll. Tie a string to the top of the cone (or poke holes through the toilet paper roll and thread the string through), spread peanut butter all over, roll on some bird seed (it will stick to the peanut butter), and hang your feeder up.

Step 3
You could do something similar with an old bagel -- spread peanut butter and bird seed on it and hang it like a tire swing on a branch.
-
Step 4
To construct a more complicated bird feeder, take an empty plastic soda bottle and turn it upside down. Bore two holes near the top of the bottle (now the bottom of the bird feeder) and poke a stick through, to create two perches. Make several more holes above the perch so the birds can access the seed. Then bore two more holes toward the top (the bottom of the bottle) and thread a strong piece of string through for hanging. Fill the bottle with bird seed and seal it with the screw cap.

Step 5
Instead of throwing your old Christmas tree away after the holidays, you could turn it into a giant bird feeder. Simply prop it up in your yard, spread peanut butter on the branches, and sprinkle bird seed over the peanut butter. The birds will eat it up!
