What is Maitake Mushroom Used for?
The maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa) is a polypore fungus in the class Basidiomycetes. It is collected from the wild and grown in culture for its edible and medicinal qualities. Common names include hen-of-the woods and dancing butterfly mushroom.

Maitake the Edible Mushroom
Fresh and dried maitake mushrooms are sold at market for inclusion in foods such as Asian soups. The mushroom's firm texture and earthy flavor work well in just about any recipe calling for mushrooms.
-
Traditional Asian Medicine
People in Japan and China have for centuries used the underground tuber-like portion of the fungus, from which the mushrooms grow, as an immune system stimulant.
-
Immunostimulation
There is scientific evidence that maitake D-fraction, a beta glucan, is effective at stimulating and improving immune system function. The American Cancer Society says several studies in both the U.S. and Japan have shown this effect.
-
Anti-Tumor Activity
According to the American Cancer Society, research suggests that maitake extracts limit growth of cancer cells and inhibits metastasis. Proof of benefit in cancer patients is lacking, though.
-
Assorted Medicinal Claims
As is the case with many medicinal mushrooms, anecdotal and in vitro studies indicate maitake may be useful for reducing blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, reducing fatigue and treating diabetes.
