MAC Cosmetics was founded by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, two men in the fashion industry who wanted to develop makeup that could withstand the demands of professional models, yet be versatile enough for the average woman. MAC, which stands for Makeup, Art, Cosmetics, has achieved a high level of success. Celebrity endorsements helped popularize MAC, and it is one of the leading makeup brands worldwide.

MAC was founded in Canada in 1985. About six years later the company opened its first U.S. store in New York. In 1998, Estee Lauder acquired MAC, which continued to operate under its own label.

MAC is committed to environmental issues and recycling. For example, the "Back to MAC" program rewards customers for returning packaging to its stores. Each customer who returns six MAC primary packaging containers to a MAC store is given a free tube of lipstick. MAC also adheres to cruelty-free policies.
