Overview
New advances in the science and knowledge of skin care are making it easier to keep skin looking good longer, which is why these days it is difficult to tell the difference between a 40 year old and a 30 year old. But maintaining good-looking skin doesn't have to be a chore, an expense or a secret known only to the wealthy, as keeping your body's largest organ beautiful just takes consistent effort and wise practices.

Prevention and Protection
One of the most important ways to keep your skin radiant is to make sure you prevent damage. For instance, if you shave often using a razor give yourself ample time to do so in a slow, controlled manner to avoid cutting yourself as a result of being in a rush. Also, use softening hair oils or moisturizing shaving creams to help you along.
Apply sun-blocking lotions or sprays that are rated SPF 15 or higher to your exposed skin any time you plan on being out in the sun, and use an SPF 15 or higher lip balm to give your lips the same protection. In addition, wearing a wide-brimmed hat will help shade the skin on your face and head. You can even buy tinted window film for your car to protect you from harmful rays while you are driving.
Avoid smoking, as exposure to free radicals speeds the aging process, and reduce the amount of caffeine you consume, as it can sap your skin of moisture it needs. Finally, use a moisturizing lotion daily, particularly after taking a shower, to help ensure your skin does not become dry.

Diet and Exercise
Drink 8 to 10 cups of water a day to keep your skin looking hydrated and healthy, and it is also believed that consuming a regular dose of buttermilk contributes to skin health. What you eat also has a big impact on how your skin holds up over time. Stay away from fried foods and those high in sugar and fat.
Regular physical activity is important for all aspects of your health, your skin included, which is why exercising three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes consecutively is imperative. Avoiding roller-coaster-like weight gains and losses is also important to skin appearance, as over time skin begins to lose its elasticity.

Practices
Check your skin regularly for new moles and blemishes, as they can be a sign of cancer or other skin diseases. See a dermatologist as soon as you can if you are concerned.
You should also make sure that the products you use fit your skin type. For instance, if your skin is oily you may not want to moisturize as much, and if it's dry you should be careful not to use harsh soaps when washing. Your skin could also be sensitive, which can cause breakouts when using certain products. Washing your skin should be done on a daily basis but be careful not to strip it of vital nutrients.
