How to Keep it Real in Dating

by Mika Lo
  • Overview

Expressing your true character and desires when dating can be difficult when you are trying to put your best foot forward. Keeping it real is a necessary part of dating. To keep it real in dating you must embrace honesty while combining it with the ability to recognize expedient situations to display true depictions of yourself.

  • Step 1

Discuss your beliefs. When you begin dating someone, it is essential for you to talk about your values. Display the values and beliefs that you discuss so you aren't hypocritical. This will also let your date know your stance on some issues early such as sex and dating in general.
  • Step 2

Be realistic. To keep it real you will need to let your dates know what you expect through action and dialogue. This could call for subtle, yet frank, action on your part. If you believe in splitting the bill when you first go out, then let your date know ahead of time so she can decide whether that is acceptable. You can also do this by forgoing some actions that are considered polite, such as opening doors if that will not be your everyday behavior.
  • Step 3

Refrain from all-out expenditures. Spending a lot of money to impress your date is not keeping it real if it is a one-time deal. Instead of putting on luxurious displays, focus on going to places that allow you to show who you are and learn who she is. Go to restaurants you would normally eat at or your normal hangout spots to keep it real with her.
  • Step 4

Display an honest characterization of your emotions. If you are not having fun on your date, then say so. Being straight forward with answers to questions your date has can also help him decide whether to end a date early or to press forward with it. Don't waste his time by being dishonest with your emotions to finish out a date.
  • Step 5

Be tactful in every situation. Keeping it real with your date doesn't mean you have to be rude. Look for opportunities to have honest dialogue or to make comments that are germane.

  • Relaxing while you are on a date will allow you to better communicate and exhibit who you are. Try to combat nervousness by staying within a realm of comfort such as going to places or performing activities that you do regularly.

  • Always have a backup plan if you intend on keeping it real with someone when on a date in a frank and possibly negative manner. Abrupt endings to your date should be anticipated in these situations. Having transportation or a friend who can pick you up is wise.
