    The information technology (IT) field offers several options for a person interested in working with computer hardware and software. Depending on the area of expertise, the IT professional is responsible for several job functions.
  • Types

    IT professionals come in several types. An IT professional can be an expert in software, programming and designing applications. Other IT professionals are hardware experts that provide assistance to users with desktop and server component issues.
 
  • Function

    An IT professional troubleshoots hardware and software issues on computers. Programmers design applications while hardware experts design networking and computer systems. Some IT professionals secure the network and take care of Internet server issues.
  • Salary

    According to Utah Career College, IT professionals with only a two year college degree can expect to make $30,000 to $65,000 per year. (See Reference 2.) This salary may range higher for more experienced individuals as well as location.
  • Credentials

    IT professionals have the option of a college degree or certificates. Certifications from companies such as Microsoft, Oracle or Cisco are available as a way to boost career salary and job function.
  • Considerations

    IT professionals who have more job functions can work long hours. Some IT professionals are required to be available 24 hours a day in case major systems fail.
