Overview
Library technicians often work under the supervision of a librarian, helping library patrons find needed resources, checking materials in and out, preparing materials and maintaining library collections. They are employed at public, school and other types of libraries.

Function
In many libraries, library technicians perform clerical duties such as registering new patrons and performing simple cataloging of materials. Some library technicians supervise support staff. In smaller libraries, they may perform functions that are usually performed by librarians. In larger libraries, library technicians tend to specialize in a certain area or function.

Education
Library technicians usually have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some libraries also require college coursework or an associate's degree.

Qualifications
Experience in a library or bookstore is preferred. Knowledge of computers and use of databases, library automation systems and online resources is also important.

Advancement
Library technicians often advance by taking on additional duties or by completing additional education or training.

Earnings and Outlook
According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median average salary for a library technician was $26,560 as of May 2006. Employment opportunities for library technicians should grow about as fast as average for all occupations.
