How to View Instant Messages on MSN

by Rebecca Pagel
  • Overview

Instant messaging allows you to communicate in real time with your friends online. Unlike email, which doesn't require such an instant response, IM relies on two people being online at the same time and conversing directly and instantly. There are many instant messaging applications available, but MSN is one of the more popular services.

  • Step 1

Load Windows Messenger Live, and double-click on the name of an online contact in your contact list. This will bring up a chat interface for you to type out your messages.
  • Step 2

Type your message into the text box at the bottom of the window, and press "Enter" or click the "Send" button. Your message will be sent to your contact and will appear in the transcription box in the upper half of the window.
  • Step 3

Replies from your contact will appear in the same window with the contact's name prefixed to the message.
  • Step 4

Minimize the application to the system tray by clicking the "X" in the top right corner of the contact list window. The application will still be running in the background and will notify you when you receive a message.
  • Step 5

View an incoming message by double-clicking the icon in your system tray when you receive a message notification.
