Information on Staffordshire Bull Terriers
by Ashlee Simmons
-
Overview
Staffordshire bull terriers hail from England where their distant ancestors were used for hunting. Today's dogs are direct descendants of mating terriers and bulldogs. The breed was brought to America in the mid-19th century and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1974.
-
History
Remote ancestors of the Staffordshire bull terrier are the bulldog and mastiff, which produced dogs of enormous size and weight of more than 100 pounds.
-
Size
Staffordshire bull terriers are 14 to 16 inches in height. Males weigh 28 to 30 pounds while females weigh anywhere from 24 to 34 lbs. The breed is muscular and sturdy.
-
Identification
These dogs have a large head with a medium- sized, thick nose. The fur is short and smooth. Staffordshire bull terriers have large shoulders with smaller hind ends and long legs.
-
Considerations
The breed makes excellent pets for families as they are fiercely loyal. They are good with children, smart, brave and highly trainable.
-
Fun Fact
Black and tan or liver-colored Staffordshire bull terriers are automatically disqualified in AKC-judged dog shows. Full drop ears and under- or over-bites are considered to be serious breed faults.
