Paper shredders are commonly employed for individual, corporate, and government uses. Different models shred paper into different shapes and sizes--as an end result, however, all paper shredders destroy information to the point where its contents are intended to be undecipherable.
-
Function
People use paper shredders to shred a variety of documents, including bills, tax documents, credit card information, and bank account statements. In doing so, it becomes difficult to repiece the scraps of paper together again. Thus, paper shredders are helpful for ensuring that private information is kept from public eyes.

Models
Confetti-cut shredders shred paper into rectangular or diamond-shaped bits. Particle-cut shredders fragment documents into tiny squares or circles. Disintegrator shredders randomly chop paper into partcle sizes. Hammermills push documents through a screen so that they become miniscule pieces. Pierce and tear shredders pierce the paper and then rip it apart. Grinder shredders grind up documents from random angles into the smallest size possible. Strip-cut shredders shred paper into long, narrow strips--this model is, however, considered the least protective make because its end result has proven to be the easiest to piece back together.
-
Types
Four different types of paper shredders are manufactured: deskside, professional, commercial, and government-approved. Deskside and professional models are conveniently sized for personal use--they are not intended, though, for storing large amounts of shredded paper. Commercial makes are more common for businesses and frequent use. Government-approved shredders are built according to regulations for United States federal shredding standards.

Problems
The most common complaint regarding paper shredders is their tendency to jam. Many companies today, however, guarantee that their shredding products are 100 percent jam free. Additionally, the amount of storage available for shredded papers is often a concern; as a result, some modern models include a built-in compression system to eliminate overflow.

Safety
To prevent injury, many paper shredding devices include a safety sensor that will turn the machine off if hands come too close to the paper entry point. Ensure that children and pets are kept away from paper shredding machines and always exercise caution when inserting papers.
