According to Cesar Millan, the renowned dog trainer from the National Geographic Channel's show, "The Dog Whisperer," the type of food you give your puppy can affect his energy, digestion and immune system.
  • Natural Foods

To protect your puppy's long-term health, look beyond the pet food available at the supermarket and talk to your veterinarian about organic, natural pet foods offered by smaller companies and available at specialty pet stores.

  • Ingredients

The first few ingredients listed on the dog food label make up the bulk of what is in your puppy's food. Make sure these ingredients list meat, rather than meat and grain byproducts.
  • Treats

Pet obesity is becoming an epidemic. Avoid giving your puppy too many treats, table scraps or allowing him constant access to a full food bowl.
  • Amount

The amount of food your puppy will need depends on his breed, size and energy level. Talk to your veterinarian about the correct amount to feed your puppy and how much to increase it as he grows.
  • Schedule

While your puppy is growing, feeding him multiple small meals each day is better than feeding him one large meal. As a rule, feed puppies up to eight-months-old three times daily, then decrease to twice daily.
