Information on Drug Addiction

Overview
Drug addiction is a condition that causes people to use drugs compulsively. Although initial drug use is voluntary, addiction inhibits an addict's ability to stop. Addicts will seek out drugs regardless of the negative consequences to themselves and their loved ones.
-
Causes
Repeated use of drugs causes changes in the cells of the brain, which can lead to addiction. Individual personality traits and genetics also have an impact on one's proclivity toward addiction.
-
Symptoms
Drug addicts feel like they need the drug on a regular basis and to maintain a constant supply, if possible. The addict believes he cannot face his problems without drugs. Drug addicts will take desperate measures to obtain drugs, such as stealing, risking arrest or putting themselves and others in harm's way.

Drug addiction can lead to arrest and incarceration.

Treatment
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, "treatment for drug abuse and addiction is delivered in many different settings using a variety of behavioral and pharmacological (medicinal) approaches." Some people seek treatment in residential facilities or hospitals. Recovering drug addicts often join 12-step programs.
-
Relapse
Relapse, falling back into the grips of a drug addiction, is common, and many drug addicts must seek treatment on more than one occasion.
-
Complications
According to NIDA, drug addiction can increase the odds of one developing heart and lung disease, certain types of cancer, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Children of drug addicts are more likely to become addicted to drugs than children of non-addicts.
