Information on Choosing a Major for College
Your choice of a college major in large part will determine your careers for the rest of your life. Competition for graduate school positions and open job placement makes it vital that you pick your major based on your strengths, goals and motivation, and in consultation with trusted advisers.
-
Definition
A college major is the concentration of courses that lead to a specific degree and is officially declared with a college counselor. Examples include finance, biology, literature and agricultural sciences.
-
Your Strengths
Review your intellectual strengths--from previous schooling, life experiences and work history--to clearly identify your personal interests and to predict your future academic success. You will be more satisfied and more successful choosing a major that focuses on your strong points.
-
College-Specific
Not all colleges offer all degrees and majors, and some colleges have better programs than others. Consult with recruiters, counselors, published works, and the College Board to determine if the college that interests you has a strong program in your major.
-
Advisement
Seek advice from informal and professional sources, from people you have worked with and from college counselors. College counselors especially will know what each major entails, which courses will be required and what professions and graduate opportunities follow from such a degree.
-
Changing Majors
You can change your major if you determine that your career goals change. You will need to consult with your academic adviser, who will review which of the courses you have taken can be included in your new major plan and what additional courses will be needed.
