Overview
The high-energy and affectionate Boston terrier has garnered the nickname "the American Gentleman" thanks to his good-natured disposition. These dogs are extremely popular in America, and they get along well with everyone from visiting strangers to the neighbor's cat.
-
History
The Boston terrier was first bred in Boston, after the Civil War. It is a cross between an English bulldog and English terrier, and was first named the Boston terrier in 1891. The American Kennel Club first recognized the breed in 1893.

Temperament
The Boston terrier--also known as the Boston bull terrier--makes an excellent family pet. It is both friendly and intelligent, so it generally has no problems with children and it can be taught tricks easily. It is lively and will need plenty of exercise and entertainment. They need consistent and firm training as they are receptive to the tone of a human's voice.
-
Appearance
Boston terriers have a short body and tail, with a very compact build. They have very strong limbs and a broad chest. They have erect ears, a square muzzle and a wide, flat head. These dogs typically weigh from 10 to 25 pounds and are between 15 and 17 inches high.
-
Grooming
Boston terriers have a short coat that typically comes in brindle and white, or black and white. Occasionally there is a brown and white coat. They should be brushed every day and their face should be cleaned, especially around the eyes.
-
Health
The average life expectancy of a Boston terrier is 15 years or more. However, there are several health problems that are common in these dogs. If overexerted, they may develop breathing problems. They are prone to heart and skin tumors, as well as injuries to the eyes. Snoring and drooling are lesser problems, but still often seen in Boston terriers.
