How to Import Photos From Windows Photo Gallery to a BlackBerry

by Contributing Writer
  • Overview

Windows Photo Gallery for Vista operating systems imports photo and video files to the "Pictures" folder. It assigns a new folder for different dates, and you can also add a tag name on your photos when you import them. This is where you will find your photos. To import them to a BlackBerry, open up BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  • Find and Import

  • Step 1

Find your "Pictures" folder. You can find this through "My Computer" in the start menu, or open Photo Gallery to display your picture files. Windows Photo Gallery supports these type of picture files: *.bmp, *.jpeg, *.jfif, *.tiff, *.png, and *.wdp.
  • Step 2

Connect your BlackBerry device to your PC. This is done with a USB cord or through Bluetooth. If the BlackBerry asks if you want to turn on Mass Storage mode after you connect, select "Yes." If it doesn't ask, you are already using Mass Storage Mode.
  • Step 3

Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Then click on the "Media Manager" icon. This opens up a window with two sections. The top section is a mirror of the files on your computer. The bottom section labeled "My Devices" is where your BlackBerry device will show up.
  • Step 4

Find your "Pictures" or "My Pictures" folder. You can also import photos from other folders. In the top pane of Desktop Manager, click on the menu icon with a folder image---its the second from the left in the top left hand corner of the top pane. This displays the folder tree for your PC. Find your picture folder and click on it once. It will display the photos in the right hand side of the top pane.
  • Step 5

Open the destination folder on your BlackBerry. In the lower pane of Desktop Manager, you have the option of placing the photos on device memory (usually too small to be of much use), or on a media card. The media card will have a folder named "BlackBerry." Click the "+" sign to the left of the folder. A string of files will open---click on "pictures." Your photo files on your BlackBerry will open in the right hand side of the lower pane.
  • Step 6

Select the photo in the top pane you want to import to your BlackBerry. Click on it once. To click on more than one photo, use "shift" click or "control" click.
  • Step 7

Import the photos to your BlackBerry. Once you have selected the photos you want to import to your BlackBerry, look for the "Copy Down" button in between the top and bottom panes. Click "Copy Down" to import the pictures onto your BlackBerry. A window will pop up asking if you want to convert or copy the files for BlackBerry. Use "Convert for Optimal Playback" and press "OK." Your photos will be copied to your BlackBerry. When they all appear in the bottom pane, you are done. Exit BlackBerry Desktop Manager and disconnect your device from the PC.

  • All of the photo files from Windows Photo Gallery should work on the BlackBerry. Some apps are more particular and if possible you should limit the photo formats to *.jpeg, *.gif and *.png. You can import compatible videos using virtually the same steps above---in Step 5, open up the video folder instead of the pictures folder on your BlackBerry, and import compatible video files. To find compatible video files for your BlackBerry, see Resource 1. Use the same steps to transfer photo and video files to your PC. In Step 7, select the photos on your phone and the destination folder on your PC, then hit "Copy Up" instead of "Copy Down."
