Overview
If you are like many automobile owners, you have never really given your car battery much thought. When it comes time to replace it, you may need some guidance in identifying a new battery with the proper size and characteristics for your automobile. Take the time to familiarize yourself with some car battery basics before you go out shopping, and you will be able to identify a good battery for your specific application.

Step 1
Identify your automobile's battery by locating it in the engine compartment if you have no previous knowledge at all regarding auto batteries. The battery is usually located at either front corner of the engine compartment, is rectangular or cube shaped, and has two terminals with cables attached to it.
-
Step 2
Use the battery group size to identify the proper size battery for your automobile. The group size, as well as all the necessary specs for your new battery, are listed in your vehicle's owner's manual. A professional at an auto parts store can also look them up for you. The group size is also printed right on the battery itself.
-
Step 3
Identify batteries that have the minimum recommended cold cranking amps (CCA) for your vehicle. This is especially important if you live in a cold weather climate.
-
Step 4
Identify batteries that are a good choice for your car by choosing from those that also have the minimum recommended reserve capacity (RC).
-
Step 5
Pick a battery that meets all the above criteria, and also has a warranty and price that meet your preferences.
