Ideas for Wedding Cake Designs

by Nay Moon
  • Overview

The traditional wedding cake made its debut in the 19th century. They were single-tiered cakes with little variation. Today, you have numerous choices of color, filling, design, height and depth of cake.
  • Choosing a style

Want a traditional wedding-cake design? Consider round tiers slathered in butter-cream frosting with yourself and your partner immortalized in plastic on top of the cake. For something whimsical, try trays of cupcakes stacked to look like a traditional tiered cake. How about a bit of elegance with mini cream puffs stacked on top of each other and drizzled in spun sugar? Maybe a square tier cake, a little off center with "pillow top" fondant covered in sugar peonies? Find a style that reflects you, your partner and your celebration and let your imagination soar.

  • Choosing a designer

There are many ways to go about this. Try asking family and friends. Someone should be able to point you in the right direction. After all, word of mouth is the best form of advertising. If a cake designer is worth praising, they will be praised loud and often. Your next best option is to thumb through your local phone book and start making inquiries by phone. The Better Business Bureau has a website that allows you to look up any business in your area to see if they are reputable, or have had complaints filed against them. Find a designer that will work with you. After all, this is your day, and you should get what you want.
  • Choosing a cake

With so many options available to you, don't let the sugar high during the tasting to impair your judgment. Let your taste buds guide you and remember that you can have your cake and eat it too.
