    There are many different processes by which hydrogen fuel can be collected. The most common method is electrolysis, but hydrogen can also be collected using the Kvaerner process, the fermentative hydrogen method, biological production, photoelectrochemical water splitting, thermochemical production, or reactive production. While all of these methods are capable of creating hydrogen fuel, electrolysis is the most popular method because it is easy and inexpensive.
 
  • How Is Hydrogen Fuel Collected Using Electrolysis?

    It is relatively easy to collect hydrogen from ordinary water through electrolysis. To do so an electrical current is run through the water from a negatively charged terminal to a positively charged one. As the electricity courses through the water, it causes the hydrogen and the oxygen from the water to break into their constituent forms. The oxygen that is created bonds to the positive terminal in the form of gaseous bubbles. The hydrogen, on the other hand, forms bubbles on the negative terminal.
  • What Is High Temperature Electrolysis?

    A relatively new method of electrolysis is currently being tested that is called high-temperature electrolysis. This process is intended to collect more hydrogen fuel from water, while expending less energy to do so. High temperature electrolysis essentially works the same way that normal electrolysis does, with the chief difference being that the water is heated during the procedure. This yields a much greater return of hydrogen and promises to make the collection of hydrogen fuel a much more cost-efficient process in the future.
