Homemade Wedding Invitations

  • Overview

Wedding invitations announce to your friends and family members that you've found your one true love, and that you want them to join in the celebration of that love as the two of you become man and wife. Add a personal touch to your wedding invitations by creating them yourself. Sure, it takes a little extra time and effort--but it will actually save quite a bit of money and impress your guests as well.
  • Items Needed

Purchase a few items at your local office supply or craft supply store before beginning this project. Purchase card stock, extra cartridges for your printer (if it's an ink jet model), some vellum paper, envelopes, and embellishments like ribbon, stickers or other wedding inspired items found in the scrapbooking or card making aisle at the craft store. In addition, pick up a few glue sticks, some scrapbooking scissors in an intriguing cutting pattern, and a set of RSVP cards and envelopes in the same color of card stock as your wedding invitation card stock.

  • Wording

Decide how you'll word your actual invitation content. If the bride's parents are throwing the wedding and reception, something like, "Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth Ann Smith to John Paul Goss, etc." If the bride and groom are hosting the entire event, consider wording the invitation as follows: "Elizabeth Ann Smith and John Paul Goss request the honor of your presence at their marriage, etc." Select the font and size of the font for use on your invitation. Center the text, and type the content using your computer keyboard. Double check spelling, wording, and the date and time of the wedding. After printing the invitation out once so you can check for size and proofread it again, insert the vellum paper into your computer printer and print the number of copies you need.
  • Assemble

Cut the invitation wording using the patterned scissors. You may first measure and draw lines very lightly in pencil. Cut the vellum so it is at least 1 inch smaller than the card stock both top to bottom and left to right. Affix the vellum to the card stock. You may opt to attach it to either the inside or outside of the invitation, when the card stock is folded like a greeting card. If you put the wording on the inside, embellish the outside face of the card. You may use simple embellishments like tiny plastic wedding rings tied with ribbon. If attaching something like this to the invitation, use craft glue or a hot glue gun, since the glue stick is best for use on various types of paper only. Assemble your homemade invitations. Place the invitation into its inner envelope, along with the RSVP card and its envelope. The inner envelope will bear the names of the people invited. The outer envelope will have the address of the guest and the return address of the bride written on it.
Print your invitation on vellum and attach to a card stock backing.
