Overview
Halloween is as popular with adults as it is with kids. Adults looking for a costume idea may want to consider a homemade costume project. Homemade Halloween costumes are often the hit of the Halloween party. There are many options for costumes that are easy to make and use clothing or items you already have in your home.

Considerations
Think about where and for how long you will wear the costume. Consider whether you will be comfortable with the amount of mobility your design will allow. Give yourself enough time to create your costume, as even simple costumes may need time for glue or paint to dry.
-
Traditional Costumes
Start with black pants and a black, long sleeved, turtleneck style shirt to make your own skeleton costume. Purchase white fluorescent fabric marker from the craft store. Place the black clothing on a flat surface and use the marker to draw the pattern of skeleton bones. Search the internet and print out a picture of a skeletal frame to use as a guide if necessary. Paint your face white with face paint. Top off your costume with an optional back wool cap. Use colored fluorescent markers if you prefer to be a colorful skeleton, just make sure it is a color that will show well against the black surface.
Use black pants and a white billowy shirt as the basis for a homemade pirate costume. Add a black vest, a bandanna or skull cap, a hoop earring and an eye patch to complete the pirate outfit. Purchase optional props from a party goods store such as a sword or hook.

Creative Costumes
Create a Christmas tree costume from green clothes and your collection of tree trimming decorations. Wear all green and accessorize by adding ornaments, tinsel and candy canes. Use a glue gun, pins or Velcro to secure the items to your outfit. Drape garland around yourself. Cut a star out of a piece of cardboard and wrap in aluminum foil. Glue to a headband and wear this tree topper on your head. Glue flameless tea light candles to your outfit to create the effect of glowing lights. This costume can be as elaborate as you desire. Try adhering wrapped gifts to a tree skirt and wear it as you would a real skirt. Sort through your collection of decorations for inspiration, but don't use fragile pieces.
Turn a garbage bag upside down and cut out a hole for your head and arms. Glue trash items such as empty boxes, tissues and empty cans to the bag. Drape it over yourself to become a bag of garbage.
-
Group Costumes
Have everyone wear black pants and black, long sleeved turtleneck shirts. Paint your faces blue with face paint to become the Blue Man Group.
Wear tattered clothes, makeup and teased hairstyles to become a 1980s rock band. Purchase inflatable instruments and microphones from a party goods supplier to use as props.

Warning
Don't use items you value too much to risk ruining or losing.
