Overview
Ringworm is a skin condition caused by a fungus that can develop on a number of locations on the body. The common name for ringworm, which is known as a dermatophyte, is tinea. Although severe cases often require the assistance of prescription medications, home remedies, specifically over-the-counter medications, are often used for mild cases or as a first line of treatment.

Locations and Symptoms
Ringworm can occur over many parts of the body. If it develops over major areas of the body, including the legs, torso and arms, it is known as tinea corporis. If you have ringworm on the feet, it is known as tinea pedis, or perhaps more commonly as "athlete's foot." If it develops in the area of your genitals, it is known as tinea cruris or "jock itch." Finally, if it develops on the scalp, it is known as tinea capitis.
The symptoms of ringworm are fairly similar throughout the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, the skin becomes inflamed and irritated, often giving off the appearance of a ring, hence the name "ringworm." The skin is most often itchy, and typically appears red and scaly. If it develops on the scalp, patches of hair may fall out.

Home Treatment
If your ringworm infection is considered mild and prescription medications are not necessary, Medline Plus recommends an over-the-counter anti-fungal medication that can be purchased at most grocery stores. Examples include terbinafine, also known as Lamisil; miconazole, also known as Monistat-Derm; and clotrimazole, also known as Lotrimin AF. Since a fungus thrives in warm, damp places, you should always keep the affected area clean and dry. According to the National Institute of Health, if the condition fails to improve using these conservative home methods, you should consult a physician, as prescription medication may be required to adequately treat the infection.
