Holistic Medicine Careers

by Therese Pope
  • Overview

Holistic medicine careers are booming across the world. As baby boomers and seniors age, Western medical treatments don't always work for their many aches and ailments. There is a diverse range of holistic medicine careers that treat a wide variety of symptoms and offer alternative treatments to Western medicine.
  • Acupuncturists

Acupuncture has been an ancient Chinese healing tradition and helps ease pain and medical symptoms. Acupuncturists treat patients by placing small needles along the meridians of the body.

  • Naturopathic Doctors

Naturopathic doctors heal patients with the use of herbs and complementary therapies. Naturopathic doctors must attend special naturopathic medicine schools, and many have traditional Western medical backgrounds.
  • Hynpotherapists

Hypnotherapists rely on relaxation and hypnotherapy sessions to treat patients (both physically and mentally). Hypnotherapy creates a mind-body connection with patients to help them alleviate medical symptoms and psychological issues.
  • Reiki Healers

Reiki uses energy healing and hand placement on certain parts of the body to treat people. Reiki focuses on the chakras (the energy centers of the body) to treat medical conditions and emotional disorders.
  • Massage Therapists

Massage therapists use different types of massage techniques to heal patients. Massage therapists sometimes work alongside medical practitioners, chiropractors and medical doctors to help treat patients' pain and medical conditions.
  • Shamanic Healers

Native American Shamanic healers concentrate on Native American chants, vision quests and energy healing to help ease physical and mental illnesses. Shamanic healers also utilize traditional Native American herbal remedies and relaxation techniques to help people.
