Holistic Care for Old Dogs

by Nicole Klemas
  • Overview

Holistic veterinary medicine is sometimes misunderstood as "alternative" medicine, but in reality it considers all aspects of a pet's life (behavioral, emotional, physical, diet, activity and so on) and incorporates many modalities of care (conventional medicine, Chinese medicine, behavioral modification, chiropractic care, herbal supplementation, and more). Because holistic veterinary care presents a wide range of options for treating senior pets, owners of old and aging dogs may find holistic care to be a good choice for their canine companions.

  • Step 1

Identify a reputable holistic veterinary practitioner in your area. How will you know which doctor to choose? The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association makes it easy to find a doctor that will fit your needs. You can visit the AHVMA website at http://www.ahvma.org and use the "Find A Holistic Veterinarian" page to conduct a comprehensive search. If you do not have a computer with an Internet connection, you can reach the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association by phone at 401-569-0795.
  • Step 2

Make a list of important information about your senior dog. Before visiting your new holistic veterinarian, you should have a clear, complete list of things about your dog that might impact its care. It's helpful to write down this list and bring it to the appointment with you; this way, you will be able to answer the veterinarian's questions and be sure that all of your concerns are addressed. Include basic information about your dog, such as age and breed; note the type of food and any medications the dog receives; and list any changes in behavior, health, or anything else you would like to discuss with a holistic veterinarian.
  • Step 3

Bring your list to your first appointment with a holistic veterinarian. Use it to tell the vet about your dog and to bring up any concerns you would like to discuss with the veterinarian. This is the time to develop a plan for your dog's care. Many veterinarians recommend supportive treatment for older dogs, even if the dogs are otherwise well. For example, dietary supplementation for joint care, chiropractic adjustments for pain relief, or behavioral modification for stress may be used. If your dog has existing medical conditions, be sure to mention them to the veterinarian and establish a holistic plan for these as well.
  • Step 4

Understand the plan for your older dog's care before you leave your veterinary appointment, including any supplements or medications that you need to purchase or follow-up appointments that you need to schedule. Be sure that all of your questions are answered and that you and your new holistic veterinarian completely agree on the care plan for your senior dog before you leave the office.
  • Step 5

Implement the holistic care plan your veterinarian has developed after you and your dog have returned home. Purchase any items you will need and begin using them according to the veterinarian's instructions. Stay in touch with your holistic veterinarian and don't be afraid to contact the vet's office if you have questions or if your dog's condition changes.
