Hip-Hop Dancing Techniques

  • Overview

Hip-hop sprang onto the dance scene in the 1970s as an intense, rhythmic expression of hip-hop culture. Hip-hop dancing techniques can be choreographed or improvised in freestyle form. Hip-hop dancers frequently compete, or battle, against each other within a circular dance space known as a cipher.
  • Move to the Beat

Hip-hop dance routines are created by performing combinations of set movements. To complement the eight-beat rhythm of hip-hop music, a combination features eight moves, one to go with each of the eight beats. If you want to dance faster, simply double the moves so you are performing 16 moves in 8 beats. Some popular moves include the Windmill, Flare, Chair Freeze, Pop-Up, Break Dance and Moonwalk, all of which are demonstrated in online videos for in-home practice.

  • Make Fashion Statements

The hip-hop dancer's signature baggy clothes were originally worn more for comfort than style. Today, comfort that looks "hip" is still an essential part of the hip-hop image, especially when it comes to your shoes. The split-sole sneaker is worn by most hip-hop dancers because it offers the shock absorption and flexibility needed to spin, pop, lock and jump around. Popular brands include Puma, Adidas, Capezio and Vans.
  • Shake Your Booty

Hip-hop dancing takes strength, flexibility, coordination--and practice. Download your favorite hip-hop music by Eminem, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Lady Gaga or countless other popular hip-hop artists and start shaking your booty to the beat. Someday, you might even find yourself battling freestyle in a cipher.
