    West Highland White Terriers are known for their spark and playfulness. The breed loves people and is trainable under an experienced owner's guidance. A Westie, a nickname for the breed, is a hardy, tenacious companion springing from hunting stock. These dogs make excellent family pets and are loyal, fun companions for children and adults.

    West Highland White Terriers hail from Poltalloch, Scotland, where they were once called Poltalloch or Roseneath Terriers. The name changed in 1909.

    Westie males are 11 inches at the shoulders while females are 10 inches, with a weight ranges of 13 and 22 lbs.
  • Temperament

    The temperament of Westies is confident. They quickly establish themselves as pack leaders. Their owners must curb aggressive tendencies.
  • Identification

    West Highland White Terriers are known for snow white coats, short tails and small, pointed ears.
  • Considerations

    Westies need regular, daily brushing as well as routine clipping.
  • Expert Insight

    At one time, rumor has it that Westies varied in color, and a red one was shot mistakenly by hunters. After that, the dogs were bred to be white only.
